Lorenzo Montemayor (26 May 1767 – 20 November 1841)
Son of a Spanish marquis who became a Neapolitan artillery general, he attended the Naples Military Academy from 1779 to 1787, leaving as a second lieutenant in the engineering corps. In 1789 he was promoted to lieutenant with the merging of the engineering corps and the artillery; in 1794 to captain 2nd class, in 1796 to captain 1st class, in 1798 to major, and during the Neapolitan Republic in 1799 to battalion chief. His brother Raffaele was beheaded on February 8, 1800, along with two other naval officers, including Luigi de Lagrennelais. Montemayor was sentenced to exile for life. He was accepted in the engineering corps of the Italian legion as a captain 1st class on 9 September 1800, a rank that was confirmed after an examination in March 1802. He returned to Neapolitan service in 1806, was appointed baron on January 1, 1811, and rose to the rank of brigadier general in 1814. Since he had taken part in the 1820 uprising, he was removed from active service, then reinstated in 1832 (cf. MSA, WO 543, d’Ayala, Mariano. 1843.
