Francesco Ferrari (b. Saronno, 24 August 1777)
Ferrari enrolled as a volunteer cannoneer in the Lombard foot artillery in October-November 1796, was promoted to corporal in December-January, to sergeant in the fall of 1797, then to assistant NCO on 4 February 1799. He rose subsequently to lieutenant 2nd class on 18 May 1800, to lieutenant 1st class on 17 September 1800 and to captain 2nd class on 17 April 1801, having served in the General Staff of Marmont. He was afterwards promoted to captain 1st class on 22 November 1806, to squadron chief in the horse artillery on 21 July 1811 and finally to major on 18 September 1813 (MSA, WO 1528, OR 89).
