Francesco Verlato
Born into a noble family, he entered the Verona military school as a cadet in 1765, leaving it as an artillery lieutenant in 1771. He ascended the ranks in the Venetian army until the rank of division major, then in September 1797 was made battalion chief in the Venetian Legion. He was examined and made battalion chief of the Cisalpine artillery on 5 May 1798. In November 1800 he was employed as an associate to the 2nd division of the War Ministry, a post he held until 25 July 1801, when he was made a member of the nomenclature commission. He was promoted to colonel on 7 July 1803 and on 4 September he was appointed parc director.
