Rossi

Giuseppe Girolamo Rossi (b. Carbonate – d. Milan, 23 May 1811)

He studied at the University of Pavia, being licensed as an engineer-architect in 1791. He worked with Motta from 1792 to 1796 from 1792 to 1796 at the census adjustment of the rivers Ticino, Po, Adda, Lambro and Oglio. He collaborated thereafter with the French at works in the fortresses of Milan and Pizzighettone in 1797-1798. He was admitted into the Cisalpine engineering corps as a battalion chief after an examination on 4 April 1798. He was subdirector at Mantua, then in 1799 provisionally assumed general directorship of the engineering corps, seeing that Bianchi d’Adda and Caccianino were employed at the War Ministry. He retreated to France with the army, and in 1802 was interim director of the engineering corps on the left bank of the river Po. Promoted to colonel on 6 October 1803, he became director at Milan. He commanded the topographer corps from 15 September 1804 to 2 August 1805 (Cf. MSA, WO 1821, 2032 bis, 2856).
