Auguste Frédéric Louis Viesse de Marmont (Châtillon-sur-Seine, 20 July 1774 – Venice, 3 March 1852)
A nobleman, he studied at the Châlons artillery school in 1792. He served at the siege of Toulon and was Bonaparte’s first aide-de-camp in the First Italian Campaign, then served in Egypt and took part in Brumaire. He participated in the Second Italian Campaign and was made a lieutenant general and commander-in-chief of the artillery of the Armée d’Italie. He was then first inspector general of the artillery from 16 September 1802 to 14 June 1803, when he was put in charge of adjusting the Gribeauval system to the Year XI system. He participated in the 1805 campaign, and was then made governor general in Dalmatia and commander-in-chief of the army of Dalmatia in 1806. He was made duke or Ragusa in 1808. Took part in the 1809 campaign and was made marshal of the Empire and governor of the Illyrian Provinces. Served in Spain in 1811-1812, then in Germany in 1813 and in France in 1814, when he made his corps march away from Paris after negotiating with the Allies. He was made a Peer of France and then governor of the 1st military division in Paris from 1821 to 1830, when he fought against the insurgents. Thereafter he never came back to France. He was decorated as Grand Eagle of the Legion of Honour in 1805.
