Henri-Gatien Bertrand (Châteauroux, 28 March 1773 – Châteauroux, 31 January 1844)
Enrolling in the Paris national guard, Bertrand went on to study at Mézières in 1793-94. As a captain, he was examiner of the Cisalpine candidates for the engineering corps on 4 April 1798. Promoted to brigadier on 6 September 1800, to lieutenant general on 30 May 1807, he was made a count of the Empire in 1808. Having participated in the Hundred Days, he accompanied Napoleon to Saint-Helena. Sentenced to death in absentia in 1816, he was reinstated in his rank in 1821. Commanded the École Polytechnique in 1830.
