Auguste-Nicolas Bataille (Paris, 1778 – 1821)


Bataille joined the 96th demi-brigade of infantry as a private in 1798, then became a pupil second lieutenant at the artillery school of Châlons in 1800, lieutenant 2nd class in the horse artillery in 1801, lieutenant 1st class in 1802. Named aide-de-camp to Eugène de Beauharnais in 1804, he was promoted to captain in 1806, to squadron chief in 1809 and to colonel in 1812, going back to France in 1814. He had been in charge of the cabinet topographique of the Vice-Roy. In 1818 he went to Bavaria to join Eugène. He was decorated as an officer of the Legion of Honour, and knight of the iron Crown (cf. SHD, 2Ye 199 e AN LH/2780/83).
