In 1797 he passed into the pontooners, then the following year was admitted to the Cisalpine miners as a lieutenant 1st class. He entered the engineering corps as a captain 2nd class in 1801, then was promoted to captain 1st class on 16 October 1807 and to battalion chief on 25 November 1810. He served at the Rocca d&#8217;Anfo, under Li\u00e9dot in Dalmatia, going on to become subdirector at Osoppo.
