Promoted to captain in 1779, he was a substitute representative for the nobility at the National Assembly, where he first attended on 20 March 1790. Lieutenant colonel in 1793, he edited the publication of La P\u00e9rouse voyages (Milet Mureau, Louis Marie Antoine Destouff de. Year V [1797]. <em>Voyage de La P\u00e9rouse autour du monde<\/em>. Paris: Imprimerie de la R\u00e9publique). He was suspended at the end of 1793, then requisitioned to continue his work on the publication in April 1794, and finally promoted to battalion chief at the end of the year. He was employed at the Fortifications Depot, then became its Director, going on to be a member of the central committee of fortifications in 1795. Promoted to brigadier in 1796, he was appointed chief of the 3rd division of the War Ministry. In 1798 he was appointed chief of the Colonial Depot, and on 21 February 1799 War Minister. In July he resigned and was promoted to lieutenant general. He was prefect of the Corr\u00e8ze department from 1802 to 1810. He was created a chevalier in 1808, a baron in 1809.
